Ostomy, one thing is certain, there is a lot to learn. If you start caring for your ostomy first, it can be overwhelming to say the least. The nurses and doctors will use words you may never have thought about before. We can relate things that you can’t even imagine as you’ve never seen before. I’ve mentioned some very simple ostomy words to connect you to some of the supplies. Be polite, and never be afraid to ask questions. These are just a few of the words that you are going to hear and there are a number of others. United American Ostomy Association has a great guide for new ostomates which I highly recommend. If you wish to learn more about this, visit Stealth Belt.
Ostomy Vocabulary Pouching System: Contains skin and pocket membrane. Methods are either a single-piece ostomy or a two-piece ostomy device. A pouching system is required for colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy both.
Ostomy Pouch: Gathers production from your stoma and is placed on the body leg. Drainable or closed pouches are available. As a component of the package, a single piece ostomy pouch will have the skin barrier. A two piece ostomy bag will not have the skin barrier attached and the skin barrier will have to be purchased separately. Sometimes called an ostomy bag.
Skin Barrier: The component of the ostomy pouching device that wraps around the stoma directly. Holding the ostomy pouch in place prevents the skin from production. Barriers to the skin are also classified as wafers or flanges.
Convex Skin Barrier: Used for smooth, square, or removed stomas to help the stoma get empty into the ostomy pouch by pressing down the peristomal skin and enabling the stoma to easily enter the inside of the pouch. Convex barriers or implants bend like a bell, and with the ostomy pouch Barrier may help uneven skin form a complete seal: enables gas to escape from the pouch and helps remove odor. Displayed in various styles.
Stoma Caps: Tiny, closed pouches which can be worn quickly while showering or intimate moments. Stoma caps aren’t intended to replace the normal daily ostomy bag.
Wear Time: How long the pouching device will wear before it falls or needs to be changed. Wear periods vary from person to person, and conditions include physical exercise, hot weather etc. For every individual person wear times should be fairly consistent. The maximum is 3 to 5 days and you shouldn’t reach 7 days.
